While Torbjörn was traditionally a niche (even frowned upon) pick for attacking on 2CP maps, there were still some creative ways to make his turret and armor packs work in your team’s favor. If you’re determined to bring the turret to the front lines, here are some tips to help you find success (or at least have some fun trying).
Why Torbjörn on Attack?
Turret Pressure: Even on attack, a well-placed turret can deny defenders key positions (like high ground) or punish flankers who get too close.
Armor Packs (Patch 1.0): Generating scrap from fallen enemies and providing armor packs to teammates can bolster a push, especially on the second point.
Rivet Gun Damage: Torbjörn’s alternate fire (shotgun blast) and primary fire (long-range projectile) can be surprisingly effective in duels if aimed well.
Molten Core: Early Overwatch Molten Core upgraded your turret to Level 3 (from Level 2), gave your turret and yourself a big rate-of-fire and health boost, and could swing fights on the capture point.
General Playstyle Tips
Be Flexible, Not Stationary
On offense, you don’t want to camp in one spot forever. Torbjörn’s turret is more of a mobile anchor rather than a static defense. Build it quickly in a flank or vantage spot, let it do its job for a push or two, then relocate if it’s destroyed or becomes ineffective.
Use Armor Packs Generously
The scrap you pick up from fallen enemies (or from your own destroyed turret) is a hidden bonus on offense. Hand out armor packs to squishy teammates like your supports or flankers. This extra survivability can help them win duels or survive poke damage through choke points.
Play Corners
Torbjörn’s own weapon is underrated. Fire your long-range Rivet Gun shots around corners at the defending team’s choke or high ground. The projectile does solid damage if you land direct hits.
If an enemy dives you, use the shotgun-like alternate fire up close—this can quickly take out a flanker or even a tank if you land your shots.
Don’t Be Afraid to Switch
Torbjörn can be a decent surprise pick to break certain defenses, especially if the enemy is heavily reliant on flankers or close-ranged holds. But if your turret keeps getting destroyed immediately or the defenders adapt, consider swapping to a different DPS or tank to maintain momentum.
Attacking Point A as Torbjörn
Turret Placement for the Initial Push
Option A: Near the Choke
Place your turret just around a corner outside line-of-sight of the main gate. This forces defenders who push out to contest or flank to get peppered by turret fire. Your team can group behind the turret for additional cover if you have a main shield tank (Reinhardt or Winston’s bubble).
Option B: Quick Flank Setup
If your team decides on a flank route (e.g., through the right side room), set your turret inside that corridor or on the upper catwalk. This covers the entrance and might force the defenders to split their focus when you actually push onto the point.
Coordinating with Your Team
Shield Synergy: Reinhardt or Orisa can protect the turret as you build it to Level 2. Once it’s up, your turret helps lock down space.
Speedy Builds: You can switch to the repair hammer as soon as you place the turret; your teammates or shields can buy a couple of seconds to get it to Level 2. Then rejoin the fight with your Rivet Gun.
Molten Core Timing
Torbjörn’s old ultimate not only upgraded your turret to Level 3 (if it was already Level 2) but also gave it extra health and rate-of-fire.
A well-timed Molten Core can quickly shred unsuspecting defenders if they poke out of the choke. Alternatively, wait until you’re close to capping the point to pop Molten Core, turning your turret into a mini-gatling monster that denies last-second stall attempts.
