Overwatch has evolved over time, most of these positioning fundamentals and map-specific tactics still apply to the original game’s Route 66 layout. The focus here is on turret placements, covering key flank routes, and leveraging Torbjörn’s abilities for maximum defensive value.
1. General Torbjörn Playstyle on Route 66
Area Denial & Turret Placement: Torbjörn’s turret is ideal for locking down key sightlines and punishing enemy flanks. Route 66 has multiple high grounds and side paths. If your turret can cover one or two major choke angles plus a flank route, it greatly reduces the enemy’s ability to push uncontested.
Armor Packs (in OW1): Dropping armor packs for allies (when you have spare scrap) increases their survivability. This is especially useful when defending tight chokepoints or for squishy heroes who might peek a lot.
Molten Core (Ultimate in OW1):
Gives your turret a rapid-fire boost and significantly increases its damage output.
Best used at critical moments (e.g., when the enemy team tries to break through a choke or push the payload past a checkpoint).
Pop it if you see an incoming ultimate from the enemy side (like a big push) to maintain control and force them back.
Survivability & Turret Upkeep:
Torbjörn can be vulnerable if caught in the open while repairing his turret. Position yourself and your turret where you have decent cover.
Use corners, rooftops, or uneven terrain to make the turret harder to hit.
2. Defending the First Stretch (Attacker Spawn to First Checkpoint)
Choke & High Ground Overviews
The attacking team starts inside the diner/cafe area and moves the payload out toward Big Earl’s gas station.
Defenders often take positions around the gas station or on the high ground balconies/cliffs to the left of the payload’s path.
Common Flank Routes
Top of Big Earl’s (Gas Station Roof): Enemies can climb or fly up (Genji, Pharah, Winston) to pressure defenders from above.
Left Cliff / Canyon (Defender POV): Some heroes can come around the high ground near the billboard/cliff to get behind your team.
Diner Upper Window (Near Attacker Spawn): Offense heroes sometimes try to poke from the diner’s upper platform before dropping.
