1. Positioning & Turret Placement
High Ground Advantage
Whenever possible, place your turret on high ground. High ground not only makes it tougher for the enemy to quickly destroy your turret, but it also gives it better sightlines to pepper the enemy team from above.
Cover Key Sightlines
Look for angles where the turret can cover multiple enemy approach routes—especially choke points—without being in direct, constant line of fire. The goal is to make enemies either waste resources to destroy it or take a longer route.
Flank Angles
One of Torbjörn’s biggest strengths is setting up crossfires. Placing the turret on an off-angle (somewhere slightly to the side of the main fight) forces enemies to decide between focusing on the turret or your teammates. This is particularly effective if your turret is attacking them from behind or from a position they don’t expect.
Move Your Turret Often
Torbjörn’s cooldown to redeploy a destroyed turret isn’t too long, so don’t be afraid to reposition if the fight has shifted or if your turret’s sightlines become useless. Staying mobile keeps the enemy guessing.
2. Long-Range Rivet Gun Usage
Primary Fire for Poke
Torbjörn’s primary fire (the single-shot, projectile “rivet”) does solid damage from a distance if you can land your shots. Use it to poke enemy squishies (supports and weaker DPS) at mid-to-long ranges.
Don’t Overexpose
While taking those ranged shots, make sure you’re peeking from cover or high ground. Torbjörn’s hitbox isn’t huge, but if you’re out in the open, hitscan heroes like Soldier: 76 or Cassidy can quickly punish you.
Take High-Value Duels
Against squishier targets (e.g., an enemy Widowmaker or an enemy support out of position), long-range rivets can be surprisingly lethal. Be patient, line up your shots, and let your turret add in extra chip damage.
3. When (and How) to Engage at Close Range
Use Overload Wisely
Overload gives you temporary buffs (extra health, faster reload, better movement). If you must duel at close range, pop Overload, land shotgun blasts (alternate fire), and try to fight near your turret for combined damage.
Short-Range Shots
Torbjörn’s alternate fire is like a mini-shotgun blast. It’s great if someone dives you in close quarters, but it also burns through ammo quickly. Keep an eye on your ammo so you’re not left reloading at a critical moment.
Pick Fights Carefully
Torbjörn can hold his own against some DPS and even supports at close range—especially if Overload is ready. But dueling a tank 1v1 (Reinhardt, D.Va, Ramattra, etc.) is generally a bad idea unless they’re already very low on health. Without Overload or turret backup, you’ll often lose these brawls.
4. Team Synergy & Awareness
Coordinate with Teammates
Torbjörn thrives when his turret is contributing crossfire, or when your team’s tank is holding the frontline so you can safely poke from behind. Communicate turret placements so your tank or other DPS can pressure from a complementary angle.
Protect Your Support Line
Another viable strategy is setting your turret near your backline if the enemy has aggressive flankers (Genji, Tracer, Sombra). Your turret acts as an early warning system and deterrent, so you can also focus on helping your supports while poking from range.
Ultimate (Molten Core) Usage
Use Molten Core to zone enemies off key objectives, choke them out of an area, or cover escape routes. The ticks of damage from the molten lava can be lethal to enemies who don’t respect it. This can help protect your turret’s location or secure kills while they’re forced to move out of position.
5. General Mindset
Leverage Turret as a Distraction
Even if your turret doesn’t get tons of kills, forcing the enemy to spend time and resources destroying it can give your team an advantage. A well-placed turret can draw more attention than it might “deserve,” creating openings for your DPS to strike.
Stay Mobile & Adapt
Reassess whether your turret’s angle is still helping the team or if it’s become too easy to destroy. Frequent repositioning can catch enemies off-guard, especially between team fights.
Don’t Overcommit
Torbjörn can be deceptively tanky when Overloaded, but once it’s gone, you’re very vulnerable. Resist the urge to chase kills too far. Maintaining good turret uptime and strategic vantage points often trumps personal heroics.
Summary: Torbjörn is strongest when you’re using your turret’s long-range pressure to disrupt enemy positioning and taking personal duels only when you have the advantage (Overload ready, a clear shot lined up, or an ally nearby). Avoid going toe-to-toe with tanks unless you have a clear health advantage or you’re confident in your turret’s support. Use off-angles for your turret, poke with your primary fire, and only engage in close quarters on your own terms.
