Torbjörn on defense for Watchpoint: Gibraltar (in Overwatch 1.0). While Overwatch has gone through various balance changes and reworks (particularly for Torbjörn himself in later patches and Overwatch 2), these tips should still capture the essence of classic “old-school” Torb play on Gibraltar defense. Keep in mind that the meta, enemy team compositions, and personal skill all influence whether these spots and strategies will work perfectly in your specific match.
1. Torbjörn’s Role in Overwatch 1.0
In Overwatch 1.0, Torbjörn was a niche pick in competitive, but on certain maps and especially on defense, he could provide strong defensive value thanks to:
Turret Damage and Range: A level 2 turret (or level 3 turret under Molten Core) could lock down key sightlines.
Armor Packs (Scrap Collection): Torbjörn generated scrap passively and from enemy corpses, allowing him to hand out armor packs for added survivability across the team.
Molten Core Ultimate: Torbjörn’s ult quickly upgraded his turret to level 3, greatly increasing its damage output and health, while also giving him faster reload and more health for duels.
Your general goal on Gibraltar defense is to force the enemy to deal with your turret’s positioning, slow down their push, and create safe vantage points for your team to hold the high ground.
2. Map Overview – Watchpoint: Gibraltar
Gibraltar is an escort map with three checkpoints. Defensively, it’s known for its multiple high grounds and flanking routes. Managing your turret to control or deny these flanks is crucial.
Key Phases:
First Phase: Spawn is right after the attacker’s starting area. The payload travels through an open outdoor area under some high ground catwalks, then moves into a narrower area near the first checkpoint (under a large arch before the checkpoint).
Second Phase: After capturing the first checkpoint, attackers move along an open area with a big health pack room (to the right as they push forward) and ascend toward the second checkpoint in a semi-enclosed space with multiple walkways.
Third Phase (Final Stretch): Inside the large hangar-like area leading to the final point. There are tall vertical areas and final corners to stall around.
